Easter 2012
The Changeling
by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley
‘Is this the greatest play Shakespeare never wrote..?’
Middleton was the greatest Elizabethan playwright after Shakespeare, and The Changeling is one of the darkest, funniest, yet most gripping thrillers in English Theatre.
Beatrice-Joanna - spoilt, rich, beautiful - is blinded by desire for Alsemero, but betrothed to Piracquo. Eager to be rid of her husband-to-be, she enlists the hated DeFlores – a disfigured servant who both repels and fascinates her. But DeFlores has desires of his own, and exacts a terrible price from his accomplice. Bound together in the poisoned embrace of their crime, a vicious spiral of lust, murder, panic and bloody revenge ensues.
Meanwhile, in the asylum, a pair of noblemen masquerade as lunatics in an attempt to debauch the madhouse-keeper’s young wife, Isabella. The subplot holds up a comic mirror to the gothic horror of the main story, turning The Changeling into a visceral yet darkly comic tale of love, sex and obsession spilling all too easily into madness.
